How to Make Your Apartment Safe
Being safe in your off campus apartment has a lot to do with thinking ahead and being smart about the basics. Remember “Stranger Danger?” Keep that in mind as you are adjusting to your new home.
The number one cause of theft and intrusion is an unlocked door. Although it may sound too simple, the truth is that the easiest way to keep your home safe is by keeping your door locked. That includes locking it behind yourself when you get home.
Even though it may seem like a hassle, if you are doing laundry in the community laundry room or just running out to your car for a book you forgot, you should lock your apartment behind you, every time you leave.
The same holds true for caution when allowing people access to your apartment. Ask for identification from anyone identifying themselves as maintenance personnel, and if you didn’t request maintenance, don’t let them in without speaking with the apartment manager.
Just because someone says they know your roommate or introduces themselves as your next door neighbor, it doesn’t mean you have to let them in. If you are sure the person is a neighbor, you can get to know each other outside your door. You’ll have plenty of time to make friends and invite him or her in. Bottom line: if you don’t know someone, don’t let them in your apartment. A little lack of hospitality in the short term will be well worth it in the long run, especially if it keeps you safe.
